Javanese chef Sonja Pereira, formerly of the Michelin-star winning Spandershoeve, is in charge at this popular Indonesian joint. The menu represents modern Indonesian cuisine with authenticity intact, and the surroundings are chic. But don’t expect a cheap ethnic night out.

The moniker may suggest Left Bank café, but this is actually another Indonesian, a hip little joint which is just the place to hang out with friends. Get cosy on a couch, order the spicy chicken curry and an extra large mango juice and chill out to the great jazz music. Open Tuesday-Friday.

The speciality here, which is actually quite rare outside Japan, is a dish called okonomiyaki. It does look like a pancake, but is structurally quite close to pizza. Toppings include shiitake mushroom, oyster mushroom, scallion, rice cake, pork strip, squid, jumbo shrimp, soba noodle, marinated beef and mixed seafood.

The Hotel Okura’s Michelin-star winning and very upscale Japanese is an expense-account treat. Executive chef Akira Oshima specialises in kaiseki cuisine, an approach that is centuries old and apparently based on minimalist Zen aesthetics as well as the elegance of courtly culture. There’s also a Japanese garden and a sushi bar.
