Housed in an authentic ‘black and white’ house, the large panes of glass do box one in slightly. But they also facilitate the air-conditioned and mosquito-free comfort of this place amidst the beauty and tranquillity of Singapore’s amazing Botanical Gardens. Ideal for special occasions.

This and Esmirada’s Orchard Hotel outlet win points for affordability and consistency of quality. Try the trademark garlic baguette on a vertical skewer with one of the tasty beef, chicken or prawn brochettes, plus a monster salad or signature paella. Authentic fare in very Mediterranean surroundings, either alfresco in the romantic courtyard or inside near the noisy activity of the open kitchen.

Fronted by the excellent Beppe da Vito (of Bice fame), with food by chef Roberto Galetti, this intimate Italian eatery is ever popular with locals and expats. The bar area is perfect for a pre-dinner Bellini, and Garibaldi likes to follow the traditions of its homeland with summer truffle festivals and seasonal specials. The food is contemporary and fresh, and so is the attitude. Look out for new outlets Riciotti and Menotti.

One of the finest French restaurants in town, L’Aigle D’Or’s intimate setting and attentive service is well worth dressing up for. It’s a shame they can’t seem to hold on to their maitre d’s or head chefs (staff changes make it hard to keep track), but the French fare is authentic haute cuisine and the wine list is extensive.

According to its owners, this vegetarian restaurant and its next-door neighbour Michaelangelo’s have maintained their popularity through knowing their strengths and continuing to deliver. A varied menu, ample portions and an expansive (but not too expensive) wine list, matched with good service and largerthan- life chef Angelo, keep the clientele coming back for more.
