This restaurant offers a tasteful, contemporary Japanese dining experience, with some of the best quality sushi, sashimi and teppanyaki in Shanghai. It’s versatile enough for either a business meal or casual dining, with a sushi bar, open dining rooms, private dining rooms and teppanyaki areas.

The ‘best Japanese lunch in town’, according to the local expat community, and it’s popular with Japanese clientele as well. You’ll find the usual sashimi, sushi, teriyaki and ramen noodle dishes. The business lunch special is a steal at only £3.25, including entrée, rice, soup, vegetables and tea/coffee. Open to 11:30pm every night, Itoya is also good for evening meals.

Tucked into a lane off Huai Hai Road, within the old French Concession. The management has managed to convert an old mansion into a three-storey traditional Japanese restaurant, with very private, closed-screen booths. The service is excellent and the food a treat. The usual all-you-can-eat buffet is available for under £10 with free-flowing drinks. You’ll be asked to leave your shoes at the door
