Shanghai / Accommodation / Contemporary

Originally designed for long-term guests, each apartment/room has its own self-contained kitchen. All one- and two-bedroom studios have balconies overlooking the nearby Xintiandi Plaza or man-made lake. Located right near the Xintiandi retail and restaurant complex, you’ll find everything you need in this part of town—in addition to the city’s main business districts.

This rather modern five-star hotel can be found between Huai Hai Road and Nanjing Road, which makes it very central. The Executive Club Lounge on the 37th floor offers an exclusive haven for the business person on the go, and many of the hotel’s services are 24-hour. Guests have been known to complain that the Four Seasons experience you expect from this chain is lacking at the Shanghai hotel, most likely due to the local staff who are rather indifferent and incapable of speaking fluent English. If good service is what you’re after, better book in to the Ritz-Carlton.

Designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates, this Shanghai branch of the Westin has been designed as an international showcase for the brand. The indoor pool is a marvel, with a cascading waterfall. It’s the city’s newest five-star hotel and the location is fantastic—you can easily access Shanghai’s business, shopping, sightseeing and entertainment areas. The Bund is a five-minute walk down the road too. Although the restaurant quality is good, it is rather expensive.
