Chosen by the Chinese premier in 2001 as the host hotel for that year’s APEC Summit, the Oriental Riverside is a deluxe five-star hotel with the most spectacular views of the Huangpu river and across to the Bund. Designed specifically for delegations, convention groups and business travellers, this hotel is great for those who need to conduct large-scale meetings in Pudong. It has the largest pillarless ballroom in Shanghai with room for 3,000 people, 25 additional meeting rooms and the latest audiovisual equipment. Huge discounts are available during non-convention times.

Located in the consulate district of Shanghai, this hotel is surrounded by some of the city’s most beautiful homes and apartment blocks, which makes local walks a treat. The recreation facilities within the complex are rather spectacular as it’s home to Shanghai’s International Tennis Centre. A unique VIP service of the Regal International is its two chauffeurdriven BMW 7 series limousines. The hotel also caters to those with special accessibility needs, which is an unusual feature in China.

The Sheraton Grand is a great venue if you’re doing business in the immediate vicinity or attending the International Exhibition Centre. However, it’s a bit out of the way and terribly expensive. Although plush and luxurious, the service is rather overbearing and occasionally unhelpful. It’s not unusual for guests to pop into the nearby Renaissance to get extra services, such as train tickets, taken care of. All the same, the hotel is favoured by business travellers for its extensive business services and facilities.
