Shanghai / Accommodation

This upmarket expat residential complex offers one to four-bedroom apartments, all with their own balconies. A lack of dining facilities is obviously due to the fact that it lies on one of the city’s best bar and restaurant strips, Hengshan Road. The International Tennis Centre and gymnasium are only down the road. It’s easy to see why this residence is home to so many of the city’s movers and shakers.

Originally designed for long-term guests, each apartment/room has its own self-contained kitchen. All one- and two-bedroom studios have balconies overlooking the nearby Xintiandi Plaza or man-made lake. Located right near the Xintiandi retail and restaurant complex, you’ll find everything you need in this part of town—in addition to the city’s main business districts.

At the right time of year, the rates for these apartments can be quite a bargain, especially considering the location. Do book well in advance. Two and threebedroom apartments are available, as well as one-bedroom bungalows near the pool. All the standard housekeeping services are provided and the staff are really friendly. A nice range of restaurants is available on site and many local ones are a short walk away.

This rather quaint hotel has been well restored to the style of its early days in the late 19th century. It serves as a bit of a backpacker/traveller hotel, but the higher-end suites are lovely with fantastic views of the Huangpu river (especially room 607, if it’s available). This hotel is good for those with business to conduct along the Bund or in Hongkou District. Otherwise it’s a bit of a trek from the main commercial and business districts. Lots of space to stretch out and relax in the old-style guestrooms.

The Donghu Hotel consists of two buildings, one west of Donghu Road (the ‘new’ building) and one east (a converted 1930s mansion). It’s a walk away from many of Shanghai’s great tourist spots and restaurants, as well as being close to the Huai Hai Road business district. Within the hotel is one of the city’s most renowned dining areas, the Zhongbin Banquet Hall, where government leaders entertain important guests on a regular basis. In addition to the standard guestrooms, private villas are available in the hotel’s lovely gardens.
