If you’re looking for a bar with a slightly older crowd and a very European atmosphere, Café Barrel is the trendy place among Japanese in the area but where few foreigners go. One reason is the prices, as a couple of draught Belgian beers and a small snack can set you back over £25.

One of the very few hostess bars in Osaka that is both inexpensive and welcomes foreign customers, Cocktail Space BB offers drinks for under £5 and conversation with beautiful Japanese hostesses, many of whom are models trying to pay the bills. Hostess bars have a dodgy reputation, but Cocktail Space BB is nothing more than a place to enjoy good Scotch at reasonable prices.

Though it is primarily a venue for world famous blues artists, the Osaka Blue Note Café also features internationally renowned Latin, jazz, and even Celtic musicians. Very, very popular, so reservations are always necessary. Expect to pay a premium for the drinks, but food prices are reasonable.

Located two blocks north of the Dotonbori river on Midosuji Boulevard, the ‘Pig’ is famous throughout Asia as being the place in Osaka to meet people. The English pub atmosphere draws expats and locals. Bass ale on tap and great fish and chips.
