Azalea is a small place in the Prince of Wales complex featuring Asian food with a modern sensibility. Azalea has two Chinese chefs—one with a background entirely in Cantonese restaurants and the other from the European hotel tradition and trained in Hong Kong and Europe in French classical cooking. The menu is a hybrid of their complementary talents. There is an outstanding wine list and the staff know what they are talking about.

Bamboo House has carved a place in Victorian hearts in the 18 years that the restaurant has been open. Behind the black and gold wooden doors, you’ll find great service and well-priced Chinese cuisine that will keep you coming back for more. There’s also a wide range of northern and regional specialities which include a magnificent Peking or Sichuan duck, spicy seafood dishes, succulent dumplings and hand-pulled noodles.

For about seven years, Becco has consistently retained its position as one of the finest of Italian restaurants. Becco cascades down one windowed side of dapper little Crossley Street, from a provisions store down through a few split levels of open dining room to a square wooden bar. It’s the harmonious combination of great food, wine, service and position that makes it worth a visit.

Brash, spirited and oozing cool, this could be a trattoria in the heart of Rome. Caffe e Cucina has defined chic Italian eating in this town. It’s a place to be seen, with a glamorous clientele. The good-looking and Interlude Italo-male dominated staff glide around the place barking orders to each other in Italian while the dark wood panelled walls vibrate with the sound of eating and drinking and people generally having a good time.

Bortolloto family and chef Olympia have a big reputation in Melbourne, and they have a big restaurant in which to demonstrate it. In spite of being part of the Crown Casino complex, the restaurant has its own personality—glamorous yet accessible. The food is excellent. Traditional Italian dishes beautifully presented. Service is sharp yet friendly and the room with soaring ceilings is large and airy. Great atmosphere, particularly at night when the view of the city can be best appreciated.
