The four-star Concorde will never win any awards, but its prime location in the Golden Triangle makes it popular with business people and airline crews. There are far fewer frills than with many other Kuala Lumpur hotels, but the business centre is well equipped and also offers secretarial services. Xin Cuisine is an upmarket Chinese restaurant offering dim sum items, while Spices Restaurant and Wine Bar features a fine selection of premium wines.

Micasa is located within Kuala Lumpur’s embassy belt, a short distance away from the Petronas Twin Towers, but it has a relaxed and unhurried feel. The decor may be slightly dated, but service is homely and welcoming. Guests will especially appreciate the free evening cocktails at the Ambassador club lounge. Most suites have a fully-equipped kitchen, a lounge and a dining area. Great for families or large groups. There is also a gym with high-tech facilities.

What makes the Pan Pacific a good place for business travellers is the fact that it’s situated right next to one of the city’s conference venues, the Putra World Trade Centre. Aside from that, this 30-storey hotel is in need of a revamp and recent tinkerings have done little to improve it. Not all rooms are equipped with internet access or faxes. However, its meeting and conference facilities are commendable, with 14 rooms including a ballroom that sits 550. The hotel also has a Chinese restaurant, a café serving international cuisine and the award-winning Japanese eatery Keyaki. The modest gym is a welcome addition.

Styled after the famous Sun City Palace in South Africa, this five-star hotel is located within a massive out-of-town resort development. Although it’s half an hour from the city centre, Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel is pretty much self-contained. It offers comprehensive convention and business facilities, such as 43 function rooms for corporate groups spread across five floors. Rooms are fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology and amenities. Outside there’s a huge water theme park, a mega shopping mall, an ice-skating rink, a 48-lane bowling centre and 10 cinemas. Four restaurants on the property will appeal to foodies. Recent additions to the complex include a four-star ‘budget’ wing and the introduction of more villas.
