The Ascott apartments are all duplexes, which makes for a nice change in lowlofted Beijing. The design is so smart and modern that it could qualify as Scandinavian, and Ascott offers very competitive rates and all the necessary services. The building has four conference rooms and the residents’ lounge is cosy and relaxing. You’ll find a large number of restaurants and shops of all kinds nearby. The building itself is located in the eastern part of the business district and a short taxi ride to the centre of the city.

The former French Hotel de Pekin, Beijing Hotel was established in 1900 and was one of the finest hotels in China at the time. As one of the last colonial hotels in Beijing, located immediately east of Tiananmen Square, it sells itself on historic grace, but it’s a disappointment for the price. The rooms are clean and neat, there is entertainment for guests and adequate services for the business traveller. But the hotel no longer stands out in the myriad accommodation possibilities available. The most recent renovation was completed in 2001, and the facelift leaves few signs of its grand past. Still, for the historically minded traveller it might be worth a visit.

This hotel is a Beijing classic. The Minzu Hotel was one of the buildings erected in 1959 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and as such it’s an historic landmark. Nixon and Kissinger stayed here in the 1970s when the relationship between China and the US began to thaw. Historic interest and the low price for such a good location are primary reasons to opt for this hotel. Rooms aren’t fantastically modern but they’re clean. The hotel offers the basic business services, but would mainly be a good choice for the budget traveller.

Again part of the Shangri-La chain, this is Beijing’s top business hotel with an extensive array of business services and facilities. Four executive floors offer 126 large and very tastefully decorated rooms, and the hotel’s Aria restaurant and bar is a top choice in Beijing—go for a dry Martini. The hotel has dozens of meeting rooms in various sizes and its business services are probably the best in the city, so make sure you book far in advance for a conference. In addition, the hotel’s location means swift transport to and from the airport.
