Weather and climate
Weather in Rome is generally mild. November and February are considered rainy months, while July and August can be extremely hot and humid, and temperatures vary from the high 20Cs to the mid-high 30Cs, sometimes even reaching 40C. In winter the temperature never goes below zero.
Local press
Time Out publish a magazine in Italian, with a good 10-page section in English. Wanted in Rome is a monthly English publication about events and life in Rome. Rome360 has the hippest venues, listings and suggestions for things to do. The weekly Rome C’è has a small section in English.
Tourist traps
Unless you visit Rome in the low season (January to March), tourists will feature heavily in your trip. The main tourist traps are centred around the big sites: the Vatican, Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon. Eating or drinking at cafés in any of these areas will be pricey. Venture instead into the side streets that wiggle through the historic centre of the city.
Tipping etiquette
There is no fixed rule, but 10% is normal in restaurants. For taxis, just round up to the nearest euro. Tipping is not necessary at bars, however if you enjoyed the service, waiters and bartenders will appreciate your tip. At hotels, it is customary to leave a small gratuity for concierges and bellboys.
Internet cafés
There are many Internet cafés around. Try easyInternet café in Piazza Barberini, or Piazza in Piscinula 15 for a high-speed connection in the centre of town.
Gifts to buy
Volpetti (Via Marmorata) is one of the best delis in town. Come here for Italian food specialities. The food is spectacular and they will vacuum-pack products for you. For classy souvenirs, visit the Fabriano store in Via del Babuino (Tel 3260 0361) for wonderful Italian-made stationery, notebooks and photo albums.
