Excursions
No visitor to Taipei should miss the National Palace Museum, which is located in suburban Waishuangxi. The famed collection of imperial Chinese art is considered to be the best in the world. The museum can be reached easily by taxi or bus. If urban noise and traffic get on your nerves, head up to Yangmingshan Park, which lies north of Taipei on a dormant volcano. Numerous walking trails zigzag through the popular park. Be warned, however, at weekends it may be just as crowded, if not more, than the city itself. Another popular destination at weekends, but just as crowded, is Danshui, a historic city located at the mouth of the Danshui River. Just hop on the mass-rapid-transit system; Danshui is the last stop. Visit Fort Santo Domingo for a culture fix before heading to any of the city's numerous seafood restaurants.
To the south of Taipei, Muzha is home to Taipei's zoo. While not much of an attraction in and of itself, a visit can be combined with a trip to the neighbouring tea plantations in the mountains. Simple, local favourites, like chicken soup with bitter gourd and pineapple, can be ordered to accompany Chinese-style green tea. The zoo and tea plantations can be accessed by taking the Muzha line of the “mass-rapid- transit” to the terminus.
